Our favourite autumn activities on the Northern Beaches

It’s autumn, and the weather is finally cooling down.

This makes it an excellent time of year to get out and about on the Northern Beaches. Whether you’re in North Narrabeen, Narrabeen, Elanora Heights, Ingleside, Warriewood or Mona Vale, there’s always something to do nearby, and autumn is a perfect time to do it.

Let’s take a look at just a few entertaining autumn activities on the Northern Beaches for people of all ages.

Things to do on the Northern Beaches this autumn

The Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden: Head up Mona Vale Road, and just before you get to St Ives, you can turn off at the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden. This garden is a gorgeous spot at any time of year, but it is well worth a visit now to see what is blooming in the autumn months. Whether you take a stroll through one of the many bush paths, have a picnic in one of the grassy areas, bring the kids to the playground or join or peruse the nursery, there will be plenty to do. The gardens even have special programs for kids and seniors to get in amongst nature. Admission is free all year round, and the gates are open from eight to five.

Eat out: There are countless places to eat out on the Northern Beaches, so here are three of our favourites.

Relative newcomer Rosa, in Mona Vale, brings a slice of Mexico to the Northern Beaches. Mixing a modern Mexican menu with chic styling, this restaurant was opened in late 2022 but has quickly made its mark.

Head up to Terry Hills, and you can experience Indian cuisine with a difference at Urban Tadka. Dedication to quality and service guarantees you a delicious meal and excellent treatment at this fully licenced restaurant. Using the traditional Indian method of tadka, which is centred around tempering the spices that bind Indian cuisine together, you will love the subtle flavours of Urban Tadka’s cuisine.

Finally, warm up your tastebuds at Kaiser Stub’n, a Northern Beaches institution. Find yourself in a traditional Austrian restaurant, complete with sausage, schnapps and strudel. Warning: arrive hungry!

Beach walks: The Northern Beaches, as the name implies, are full of beaches. Pick basically any beach, and you can’t go wrong if you want a pleasant autumn evening stroll. One of the best, though, is Mona Vale Beach. Mona Vale is officially a beautiful beach, too, with the website CN Traveller recently ranking it sixth in their list of 345 best beaches in the world. The kilometre stretch of soft sand is perfect for a stroll on an autumn evening. Keep an eye open, and you might even glimpse a pod of dolphins swimming past on the horizon. If you surf, you will be in good company out on the waves, and if you’re keen on a cold weather dip, the rockpool is perfect for doing a few laps.

Are you ready for a getaway with a difference? With a selection of different-sized cabins, Currawong Beach Cottages are a fantastic way to get away from it all without leaving the Northern Beaches. Being accessible only by water, you know you will be away from the hustle and bustle when you take your family to stay there. With plenty of water activities and bushwalking or simply relaxing in nature, you’ll be enormously refreshed after an autumn stay.

A trip to the movies is always a win in the cooler weather, and United Cinemas in Warriewood is the perfect spot for a film on the Northern Beaches. With all the latest releases from around the world and the occasional special feature like a screening of the Rodgers and Hammerstein 80th anniversary concert, My Favorite Things, there’s always something to watch at United Warriewood. Downstairs is an arcade that kids love, and right down the road is McDonald’s for an easy meal before or after the movie.

Trivia night: Pittwater RSL hosts trivia on Thursday nights, or you can head to the Park House in Mona Vale on Tuesdays when trivia kicks off at 7pm. Both venues have busy schedules, with free family entertainment on the first Sunday of each month at Pittwater RSL, and ‘Canchella’ presenting offerings from 12+ local breweries at the Park House on April 20.
